| This past week was Iowa's rainiest in 2 years. In our area the rains came after a fairly dry period, so most soaked in, although most soils are near capacity now and there is some standing water in places. Most corn herbicides have been applied, but farmers will be busy spraying soybeans as soon as it is dry enough to go, as weeds have been growing fast with all the rain. The corn market had a nice surprise last week, as the latest USDA reports project higher ethanol production and exports going forward, reducing corn stocks at the end of the 2010-2011 marketing year. While this is positive, most of the country is currently looking at excellent crop conditions, and a record large crop this year would leave us with a big crop carryover. As always in agriculture, it comes down to what Mother Nature has in store. Keeps things interesting! |
