Most of NW Iowa’s corn was planted in the past four days. It’s impressive to think about how many acres can be planted in a day. After a slow start, this flurry of planting catches us up to about normal progress for the second week of May. Variable rain on Sunday & Monday shut down planting in some areas. If we get a few more dry daysthis week, corn planting should be basically finished.
We will start to see the first planted corn fields emerging this week. Corn planted in April had to withstand two unseasonably cold weeks. Cold soil temperature (under 50) can decrease vigor and emergence. We will watchthis corn closely, but I don’t expect to have as much trouble as last year with poor stands and replanting. Over all the corn crop is off to a good start.
Soybean planting is getting started this week. The weather outlook is mostly favorable, so it looks like we’ll have
the opportunity to get most soybeans planted by mid-May which is within the optimal planting window.
