Farmers in Northwest Iowa are finishing up corn planting. T his year’s planting progress is a little behind normal, but it’s not late enough to be a concern yet. T here is still plenty of time to get soybeans planted without a yield penalty.
Yesterday May 11th we had the biggest rain event of the spring for Western Iowa. Many areas received over
an inch or rain, but once again parts of Northwest Iowa received less than a half inch. Even the driest areas have enough moisture to get the crops of f to a good start. T he problems could start later in June or July if we don’t start to build up reserve moisture in our subsoil.
I haven’t actually seen corn up yet, but I’m sure many corn fields to the Southwest of Storm Lake emerged over the weekend. T here is a lot of corn getting close, but the cool down this week is poor timing. About 25% of the corn has been in the ground f or nearly three weeks, so if it doesn’t emerge soon we could lose
stand quality and possibly even need to replant some fields.
