Weather has been comfortable lately, cool and mostly dry over the past two weeks. It’s starting to turn warmer this week. Most areas in NW Iowa are to the point where rain would be welcome. Long range forecasts are calling for warm and dry weather during the first half of August.

Most corn looks very good to this point. We have the potential to break yield records on some farms. Even the later planted corn has made it through pollination in relatively good shape. This is critical time for determining corn yields. Corn is now putting its resources to filling kernels. Stress during this stage will reduce the size and weight of these kernels. Hot weather speeds up the process and cool weather slows it down. We hope that it doesn’t get too hot this August because that could take the top off the corn yields.Soybeans are making pods and about to start making beans. This is the most crucial period in terms of yield determination. Most soybean fields have good potential at this point, but some rain and average temps will be needed in August to make a big crop. We are finding soybean aphids on many farms, but still in low numbers so far.

The grain markets seem to have found bottom and are starting to rebound because of dry weather returning to parts of the Corn Belt, a threat of hot temperatures in the forecast, and improved trade talks with the E.U
