Heavy rains continue as we close out the growing season. NW Iowa has received 5 to 11 inches of rain in the
past 30 days. Rain is no longer helpful to this year’s cops, but replenishing the sub soil for next season is a
positive. I don’t think all the rain will harm this year’s crop unless it caused major flooding on your farm or if it would lead to extended harvest delays. We are hoping for warm dry weather to improve conditions for harvest.
Most corn is mature but still wet (around 30% moisture). Some earlier corn on well-drained soil has dried down
more than that, and could be harvested soon. I see more of this as I travel west. Yield estimates are still highly
variable. I think we have a good to average corn crop.
Soybeans are turning colors and some are dropping leaves. Early beans could be harvested soon if the weather
cooperates. Many of the taller soybeans have laid over from their own weight and all the rain/wind we’ve had
lately. This shouldn’t hurt soybean yield directly, but it could make harvest more difficult because of slow/uneven
dry down and difficulties feeding into the combine head. We should generally have a good to very good soybean
crop.
