The weather has improved over the last 2 weeks with closer to average temps and some rain/snow. A lot of the frost is dissipating in the ground which will help with rain absorption instead of running off. Yesterday(Monday) was about as good of a spring day as we ever get in Iowa with 75 degree sunshine with 15 mph winds. A great day to help dry out the soil. The bad part is we are expecting another “bomb cyclone” later this week that will effect large portions of Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Forecasts are still unsure where the snow will turn to rain but some areas further west and north of Storm Lake, mostly in the other 3 states, are expecting up to 24 inches of snow. If this sounds familiar it is because a very similar scenario happened about a month ago over the same areas that caused the record flooding in parts of
Nebraska and Iowa. Let’s hope the forecast is wrong.
Markets have been struggling lately after the late March USDA report predicted much higher corn acreage for 2019 and a few less soybean acres. USDA also “found” roughly 300 million more bushels of corn in storage throughout the country. Supply and demand are telling us we already have too much corn and soybeans on hand and current exports and usage aren’t eliminating enough of our supplies. The weather this spring will ultimately decide the amount of acres that get planted and right now corn acres look like they will be lower than USDA predicts.
