Corn planting in our southwestern district has made great strides and will likely have much done before the next rain. Some farmers have taken to planting some of their beans early, which has provided excellent results in the past several years. Some are just getting a good
start on corn planting while others are finishing and moving to full-fledged soybean planting.Soil temps remain cool, just warm enough for corn to begin germination but too cool yet for soybeans to activate.

Corn prices have trended a little higher this past week. That is mostly based upon some concerns over planting delays in eastern Iowa and the eastern Corn Belt, with a cool and wet forecast. It would be unusual to see a huge move on delayed planting, but not unusual to see
some upward price movement based on this issue. Soybeans await a deal with China, which means actual pen-on-paper and not “we’re close” rhetoric. There is also concern about corn acres switching to soybeans, which would theoretically add to the global soybean stockpile.

Land sales are few this time of year. Those occurring continue to show steady values for good land.
