Most corn fields in this area have tassels out and are in the pollination process. A few fields are nearing the end and silks are drying. Still a lot of variability and that could be seen with veryuneven tassel emergence across some fields. Beans have grown enough to close the rows innarrow-row fields. 30” wide rows are mostly still open, although some are now closed up. Beansare flowering and beginning to set pods. This is the R3 stage where application of fungicide isappropriate. A relativelynew pest, the thistle caterpillar, has arrived and is defoliating manybean fields. They are fast workers at consuming leaves, so one must keep a vigilant eye out for this aggressive pest.
Corn price made a head-and-shoulders top, finishing that move and beginning a down movelast Monday. It is very seasonal that prices would start dropping in mid-July. Given the situationwith acres and crop conditions across the Corn Belt, we are surely in for more volatility.September frost would be very damaging to many acres, even those considered excellent today.
