Past Weeks Rainfall: Only light rain late last week.

Soil Moisture: Topsoil moisture is rated 85% adequate and 15% short or very short. Subsoil is 65% adequate and 36% short or very short. Drought Monitor shows normal to D0 (abnormally dry) for this area. Moisture gains were made the 3rd week of April.

Temperature: Normal temps with highs in the 60’s and 70’s, lows in the 40’s and 50’s. Warming temps in the forecast. Soil temp is 58-61.

Crop Progress: Some farmers are done planting, others somewhere in the middle.

Corn

Crop Stage: West-central Iowa is 53% planted as of May 4th, 10% emerged.

Yield Potential: Normal

Soybean

Crop Stage: West-central Iowa is 32% planted as of May 4th, 2% emerged.

Yield Potential: Normal

Very nice planting conditions nearly everywhere. Early planted corn is emerging with good soil moisture around the seed, sunshine, and warm temps. Early progress is a limiting factor against a price rally, but it seems that drooping oil prices are playing against corn well. Soybean planting will post a big progress number by next week’s report. We’re starting to see some emergence on early beans. Growing Degree accumulation should be around 15 units per day in the next week which is good progress for this time of year. Alfalfa fields are rich, green, and growing very well.
