Crops southeast of Storm Lake have really taken off over the last two weeks. Generally, corn in this region has a good uniform appearance and deep green in color. There are pockets where soils were oversaturated which resulted in stunted or terminated crops, but this is in the minority. Conditions have been favorable so far.
Soybeans are now in reproductive stages of development so flowers can now be found on most plants if they were planted in April or May. The soybeans grown here are indeterminate which means they will continue with vegetative growth while in reproductive stages of development. The summer solstice is what triggers this change.
Recently, widespread rain has been received. Most rains have been welcomed so far. This crop has not struggled with drought like conditions to this point and the most recent rain events should keep this crop in good condition for the upcoming few weeks.
Looking ahead at the short-term weather forecast, temperatures are expected to have daytime highs ranging from the mid-80s up to the low-90s with nighttime lows ranging from the low-60s up to the low 70s. During this same period, there continues to be decent chances of precipitation. Further out (8-14 day outlook), temperatures look to remain near normal and precipitation to be slightly above normal for this time of the year.
