As the Federal Crop Insurance planting date approaches (April 11th), many farmers have planters out of the
shed, cleaned up, and tuned for another spring planting. We are all hopeful for a efficient start to the 2017
growing season. Our soil moisture profile is full and we have a forecast that shows a gradual warm up with
mostly dry days ahead. This bodes well for a great beginning for this years crop.Over the past week we have accumulated between one and two inches of rainfall on top of an already full moisture profile. With the mostly dry forecast, planters could begin rolling in less than two weeks time.Below is the drought monitor map (per the USDA) for Iowa as of March 28th, 2017 showing no moisture concerns in our area:

The one factor that is not quite at the level we would like to see before seed enters the soil is the soil temperatures in
the area. Soil temps are now in the mid to upper 40’s.Those temps should comfortably hold ten or more degrees
higher for an optimal start to the crops emergence.Below is a soil temperature map for Iowa as of April 3rd,2017:

Grain Markets:
We saw periods of strength and weakness in both corn and soybean markets over the winter months. Opportunities to
sell at a very profitable level were few, but available. Of late we are seeing the effects of Friday’s USDA planting intentions report. Corn is up two days straight after projected acres were reported at 89.996 million. This is 4
million less than the final acre total for 2016. The opposite trend was seen in soybeans after decrease of corn acres
transferred to soybean acres and then some totaling a projected 89.482 million acres to be planted. This figure is 6
million more acres than the final 2016 numbers. This total movement will present some opportunities for making some
positive corn sales in the coming week.
