This is the first crop conditions update of the season. Conditions are generally too wet and cold to plant corn, but that can change fast this time of year. The past week wasn’t as wet as forecast. Many areas are now dry enough to apply fertilizer or do shallow tillage. We could see corn plating start now any day depending on the weather and forecast. Soil temps are around 50 degrees, which is viewed as the minimum temp to plant corn. The 7 day forecast is not very warm at this point, so most farmers will probably wait for now.
The grain markets are struggling to maintain a rally because of the large U.S. supply and South American crop. We’ll need a major planting delay or weather problem this summer to see a big rally.
