Weather during the first half of May was nearly perfect in Northwest Iowa for crop progress. Corn planting was finished during that time and most of the soybeans were also planted. The weather pattern changed after Mother’s day weekend, switching to cold and wet with 2 to 4 inches of rain. It looks like we will return to more
normal weather later this week.
Favorable conditions during corn emergence led to nearly perfect stands on most farms. Corn growth has slowed down since then because of the cool temps, and its color ranges from yellowish green to purple. After a few warm sunny days I expect the corn will look impressive around here. The exception to that are areas with poor drainage that have saturated soils or standing water.
Soybean planting is about 75% done. Most of the soybeans were planted into excellent soil conditions, but cool weather has stalled emergence. I don’t expect widespread problems, but we will have to watch the wet spots and be ready to replant areas if the stand is too thin. It looks like we will have the opportunity to finish soybean plating by June 1st, which is about normal with the 5 year average schedule.
