Counties of: Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Plymouth, Sioux
Most of this region received significant rain over Memorial Day weekend ranging from nearly 3 inches down to about a half inch. Parts of Plymouth and Sioux Counties were on the low-end of rainfall amounts. It was a timely rain as most crops are just becoming established. The two-week weather outlook is cool with above average chances of rainfall. The longer-term seasonal weather outlook remains hot and dry, so additional rainfall in the near term is welcome to build reserve soil moisture.
Favorable conditions during corn emergence led to good stands. Most corn has emerged and is currently only a few inches tall. The corn looks a little beat-up from wind and some frost, but I expect it will improve quickly. The next challenge is finding a time to spray post-emerge herbicides when the wind isn’t howling, and the soil is fit.
Soybean planting was essentially finished last week. Most of the soybeans were planted into excellent soil conditions and emerged quickly. We were a little worried some of the beans were planted into dry soil, but the recent rainfall should have been enough to get them started.
