Very little planting was done this week because of continued wet fields from the Memorial Day weekend flooding. It was a good week to evaluate conservation practices. T he erosion on some farms was really bad, and other farms were able to tolerate the heavy rain better.
Most of the corn emerged before the heavy rain and generally has good looking stands. The corn is behind for this time of year and it could have some problems with establishing good roots and Nitrogen loss because of the water logged soils.
The soybeans planted before the rains are having a hard time emerging because of a thick crust layer caused by the fast rain. The soybeans that still need to be planted will likely end up with a better stand, but they will be at a disadvantage because of how late they are planted.
