The U.S. corn harvest is about 12% done, the third slowest start in 5 years. Soybean harvest is at 11% its second slowest start in 5 years. Progress is picking up this week around our area. Most farmers are starting on soybeans if they can, but some corn is being harvested also. The warm windy weather will likely push the beans from being too wet to too dry within just a few days. Yield reports are variable but generally a little better than expected on soybeans.
Corn yield reports are also variable but good as a whole; the ones I’ve heard so far are from early maturity corn on dry ground or high moisture corn for livestock. We are seeing areas of stalk rot in the corn, so high winds could be a big problem.
The grain markets fell after the USDA report yesterday. The corn stocks were 165 million bushels higher than expected, and bean stocks were 17 million bushels higher. This report put more negative pressure on an already down trending market.
