Soybean harvest is progressing rapidly in Northwest Iowa. Some farmers are starting on corn. Weather
cooperated nicely this past week. Field conditions are still a little wet, but they are improving daily. The forecast is positive for the coming week also. Many farmers will finish soybeans and start on corn in the next week or so.
Soybean yields are impressive. Many fields are yielding in the 60 to 70 bushels per acre range, which is 5 to 10
bushels better than expected. It’s not uncommon for farms to set a new record high bean yield. However, fields
with diseases like White Mold or Sudden Death Syndrome have much more variable yield. It looks like the mid to
late soybeans were more susceptible to white mold, so many of those fields are yet to be harvested.
Corn continues to dry down in the field. The weather this past week was very good for drying corn. Most corn is
currently 18% to 24% moisture. This time of year we worry a lot about the stand ability of corn. We had a fair
amount of disease this year which can lead to stalk rot problems. Most fields are standing fairly good but there are problem spots. The challenge with corn harvest is waiting long enough for it to dry to an acceptable level without increasing harvest loss. Corn yields will be variable depending on many factors. I expect we will have good yields but maybe not record yields in our area.
