Harvest progressed rapidly last week. Rain on Friday slowed things down over the weekend, but prior to
that October has been dry and warm. We’ve had perfect weather for harvest. The rain was nice to reduce fire risk
in the fields and settle dust.
Soybean harvest wrapped up in mid October. Yields were excellent in most fields. 60 to 70 bushels per acre was
common on good farm ground. This year was unusual in that both the high ground with lighter soils and bottom
ground with heavy wet soils produced good results. Normally one or the other is damaged by too much water or
not enough. The same is true on corn.
Corn harvest is over half done and progressing quickly. Yields are very good, but more variable than beans based
on hybrid variety and other factors. Corn hybrids with good disease tolerance along with strong stalks/roots are
having a good year. The corn has dried down nicely, most corn is between 14% and 17%. That means there is
very little drying expense this year. Dry corn also speeds up harvest. Grain elevators are running out of
storage and having trouble keeping up with all the corn. Most corn yields are running from 200 to 230 bushels per
acre.
Overall this is the best crop we have ever had in NW Iowa.
