Wet weather returned to NW Iowa last Friday and continued through yesterday(Monday). Rainfall totals ranged from ½ inch to over 2 inches, which seemed like a lot more on the ground because it was already on the verge of being too wet. The extended outlook is dryer but cold and cloudy. Some areas may have to wait for the ground to freeze in order to get the crops harvested.

Soybean harvest is nearly all completed. Yields differ widely from farm to farm based on drainage, location, disease pressure, planting date, and other factors. Overall the soybean was crop was good but not the best ever. The season was generally too wet and cloudy for soybeans during critical times. Farms with very good natural drainage
or plenty of tile were able to overcome this.

Corn harvest was on schedule to be finished up soon (early Nov), until this latest rainy stretch. Farmers may be forced to harvest in very muddy field conditions or wait until the ground freezes. Some of the corn is not standing very well due to stalk rot and wind. These farms will be more difficult to harvest in wet conditions. Corn yields are
generally good or very good depending on location. The exceptions to that are poorly drained or flooded areas.
